A remarkable Enniscorthy runner completed his 33rd London marathon at the weekend. Now aged 74, Paddy Dobbs was well shy of his personal best of 2 hours and 26 minutes set when he was in his mid-forties. Nevertheless, he was proud to be able to claim that he is one of the few athletes to have taken part in all of the London marathons.
Originally from the cathedral town, Paddy Dobbs left for the UK as a teenager and spent much of his life in England. He took up running in earnest only after he stepped down from the boxing ring but proved to be a very stylish performer both on the roads and cross-country. He came back to County Wexford for a while in retirement and made a great impression as member of the Slaney Olympics club.
However he is now back in England and still running in old age.
