MORE THAN 80 players took part in the County Wexford Junior open championships which concluded at the Hillbrook L.T.C. complex in Enniscorthy recently.

Competitors came from as far away as Dublin, Naas and Kilkenny to join the local players on court.

Local winners included Katie Atkinson who triumphed in the Under-18 girls' singles for the fourth year in a row as well as winning the mixed doubles with partner Shane Jenkins (Wexford), defeating Hillbrook's Tony White and Alice Kelly (6-1, 6-2) in the final.

All-conquering Katie also partnered Hannah Tallon to the girls' doubles.

More success for Hillbrook came when Cian Byrne won the Under-10 boys' singles while Conor Mackey and Grace Mernagh won the Under-14 mixed doubles, overcoming Seb Pim and Jade Byrne (7-6, 6-0).

Runner-up prizes were collected by Conor Mackey and Tom White in the Under-14 boys' doubles; by Cian Byrne and Conn Kavanagh-Morris in the Under-12 boys' doubles; and by Grace Mernagh and Laura Roche in the Under-14 girls' doubles.

The presentation of the Under-16 boys' singles trophy to Nevin Rossiter (Rosslare) was made by Kitty Murphy, wife of late club President Jim Murphy.
