Double delight for Hogues in handball semis

THE SEMI-FINALS of the Wexford winter handball league got under way last week, with ten clashes taking place across five divisions.

In the Division 1 semi-finals there was a double for Ballyhogue as Galen Riordan and Peter Hughes both advanced. Hughes was given a tougher than anticipated game by John Rossiter from Garryhill before eventually triumphing 21-9, 21-19. In the second semi-final, Riordan also got the better of a Garryhill man, as he downed title favourite Daniel Fenlon on a comfortable 21-9, 21-12 scoreline.

In the Division 12 semi-finals, Pádraig Roberts made his way into a county decider for the first time in over ten years as the Kilmyshall man defeated Robbie Codd from Templeudigan 2110, 21-13. Declan Jordan (Coolboy) will provide the opposition for Roberts after he defeated Eamonn Bowe from Davidstown 21-20, 21-16.

Division 13 saw Niall Leacy from St. Joseph's get past Tom Rossiter 16-5, with Rossiter from Castlebridge retiring injured. The second semi final in this grade was a very close affair as Richard Martin Jnr. got the better of Andrew Corish from Horeswood 21-13, 16-21, 11-7.

Tommy Cummins from Horeswood advanced to the final in Division 15 with an impressive 2110, 21-5 win over Michael O'Connor from Templeudigan. In the final he will meet Stevie Lawlor from Bridgetown who defeated Paul Tracey from Arklow after a very close contest 21-18, 16-21, 11-7.

The final of Division 20 will be between James Stanners from St. Martin's and Martin Crowley (St. Joseph's). Stanners defeated Trevor Nolan (St. Joseph's) 21-3, 21-4, while Crowley defeated James Flood from St. Mary's 21-16, 21-8.
