GOREY PULLED off a major surprise win in the opening round of the Provincial Towns Cup when they beat Division 1 side Dundalk 22-17 - a pulsating victory over the 2011 winners.

Gorey played with the wind in the first-half and were soon to cause the visitors major problems as Tomás Sheehy sent a number of Garryowens in on top of the Dundalk fullback. One of these led to the opening try as Sheehy ran on to gather and touch down, with Aidan O'Brien converting.

Michael Woods raced over to extend the lead to 12-0 and Gorey were not done yet as the pack again took the ball on. When it was spread wide, John Mannion finished in the corner to take the score to 17-0, although Dundalk did score a try just before half-time.

Gorey won a line-out early in the second-half and secured good ball which allowed them to drive towards the line for the man of the match, Steven Gardiner, to score the try. Gorey were now 22-5 up. Dundalk's talent eventually shone through and they scored two late unconverted tries for a nervy finish.

The terrific support will talk about this day for years to come, and the team was applauded off at the end. The draw wasn't kind to them, however, as they are away to Cill Dara, another Division 1 team, in the second round.

It is hard to pick out any player in what was a fantastic team performance by this young Gorey team, but Stephen Gardiner at 18 years of age gave a towering performance and was definitely man of the match.
