Fethard in full control
FETHARD WILL see room for much improvement despite their ten-point victory over a battling Our Lady's Island side in this Top Oil Intermediate 'A' hurling championship Group B game at Rathangan on Saturday last.
It is true that Fethard had only to play as well as they needed to take full points, but they will still be disappointed with many aspects of their game particularly with far sterner tests ahead. Still, they managed to see off the opposition with some ease, although it must be said that the Island never gave up the chase, but their lack of power in attack proved quite costly in the end.
After Chris Colfer and Fintan Mullins had exchanged points inside the opening four minutes, the eventual winners went on to take control, leading by 0-5 to 0-1 at the end of the opening quarter. With Garrett Foley and Chris Colfer continuing to pick off points, a Seán Foley 25th-minute goal helped Fethard to a nine-point interval lead (1-10 to 0-4).
The pattern of the game was not for changing on the resumption as Fethard continued to control matters, mainly through the dominance of Garrett Foley and Chris Colfer in midfield, while their opponents were totally reliant on the efforts of Fintan Mullins up front.
Early second-half points from Colfer, Seán Foley and Garrett Foley saw them increase their lead before the Island responded with a Fintan Mullins point. It was to remain the same to the finish as Fethard continued to pick off points, while Mullins and substitute Adrian Meyler responded for the Island, but in a one-sided game there was only going to be one result as Fethard controlled matters for most of the 60 minutes.
