THE ANNUAL April Stake now sponsored by Droopys Stud got under way at Enniscorthy track on Thursday last and it was a night of doubles for well-known prefix runners 'Piercestown' and 'Ballinclare', while trainer Harry Seery also got in on the act.
The new -40 track rating has come into being and it will take few months to work out if it will be a success. All six heats of the April Stakes were run.
Heat one saw 'Royal Blaze' running from trap two and leading the way but being challenged by the Maria Byrne-trained 'Ballinattin Ash' ('Crash-Dysert Dainty') approaching the final bend. 'Ballinattin' proved the stronger up the straight, getting the better of 'Blaze' by a length with 'Headway Mossey' finishing well for third place. The winning time was a good 28.93 and owner Noel Ryan (Faithlegg, Waterford) was enjoying his sixth race win with this fellow.
Heat two saw the first of the 'Piercestown' victories as 'Piercestown Club', owned by Seamus Whelan, was led by the early-paced 'Telex Hawk' until the home straight. However, 'Telex' started to fold on the run to the line as 'Piercestown' stayed on strongly to score going away by two lengths to record his third race win from only seven starts in a time of 28.94. Ronald Shinkwin is the trainer.
Heat three was a very close-run affair. Trap four runner 'Metric Pluto' ('Rumble Impact-Metric Daisey') showed the early gears to lead and continued to do so until the turn for home where he was challenged on both sides as 'Oakfront Miller' came inside him while 'Turkish Kitty' came on the outside. After a great battle on the run to the line, 'Metric' gamely hung on by a short head from the David Morris-trained pair 'Turkish Kitty' and 'Oakfront Miller' who was three-quarters of a length back in 29.10. Pauline Byrne (Enniscorthy is the winning owner and 'Metric' was scoring his third win from four starts.
Heat four was a more clearcut win as the Eilish McCann (Gorey)-owned 'Ballinclare May' ('Lughill Jo-Ballinclare Dime') came in as reserve and she made up for her narrow defeat on the previous Monday night when going past leader 'Farloe Gucci' down the back to go away and score by four and a half lengths in 29.10. 'Dons Domain' ran on well to take the runner-up spot.
Heat five saw another dog make up for being beaten on Monday night as 'Piercestown Mick' ('Droopys Maldini-Piercestown West') was hot favourite on that occasion but took a tumble on the first bend. Showing no ill effects, he had no such bad luck this time as the field went to the bend in a line. 'Piercestown' went through on the inside to lead and he raced home a clear three and a half lengths winner form 'Deenside Hero' who ran on well for second. The time was 28.85 and Ronnie and 'Shanks' combined again here, making it a double.
Heat six saw trap one runner 'Clover Harry' set the early pace, but trap three runner 'Spoon Me' ('Duke Special-Ballyverry Lee'), trained by Harry Seery, went past down the back to go on to score by four lengths from 'Bistro Will' in 29.02 and record his seventh race win.
Owner Eilish McCann (Gorey) completed her double when her remarkably consistent bitch 'Ballinclare Vera' ('Ace Hi Rumble-Ballinclare Dime') showed her great determination yet again in this A0/1 contest. 'Kenwood Impact' made the running as 'Ballinclare' made her move down the back to join the issue by the third bend before taking it up turning for home, and she ran on strongly to hold the finishing run of 'Piercestown Lucy' by a length to record her 13th race win.
Race nine, an A2, saw another reserve win as 'Baby Bilko' ('Dukes Special-Ballyverry Lee') completed the double for Harry Seery when putting in her challenge around the third and fourth bends before going on to beat leader 'Fiancee Alsation', with 'Ballinaboola Boss' in third. The time was 28.95 and 'Baby' is on the upgrade following her win last week. The winning owners are Svitiana Bilko and Lorna Harrison.
Racing got under way with an A4 575 and another owner in form of late, Shay Hodnett (Enniscorthy), got another win as his 'Pick A Cherry' ('Nobooth For Gary-Cherry Picker') took the lead off the second bend to race to a fine three-length win from 'Sheila Said So' in a time of 31.53.
Shay had also won the Track Bar A6 final on the Monday night with his 'Grancore Player', so it was a good week all round for the kennel.
The second round of the Droopys Stud April Stake will feature this Thursday and a good night's racing is in prospect.
