Powerful emotions and memorable music have earned La Traviata its place amongst the archetypal operatic romances: the scandalous doomed love affair inspired Verdi to create such well known arias as Ah fors'è lui and the virtuosic Addio, del passato sung from Violetta's death bed, which trace Violetta's journey toward disillusionment with dramatic conviction. This imaginative Metropolitan Opera production, directed by Willy Decker, floods the vast stage in blocks of colour and light, creating a stunning cinematic vista.

French soprano Natalie Dessay sings Violetta, surrounded by a stellar cast. American tenor Matthew Polenzani sings Alfredo, and the great Russian baritone Dmitri Hvorostovsky sings Germont. La Traviata is also conducted by Fabio Luisi.

Hosted by star sopranos Natalie Dessay and Deborah Voigt respectively, this live satellite transmission concludes The Met: Live in HD 2011-12 season, which now reaches 13 venues in Ireland and more than 1,700 venues in 54 countries .

The Met: Live in HD is presented in Ireland by Classical Arts Ireland, in association with RTÉ Lyric fm and the Sunday Times.
