In the Heritage Park at the winter solstice ceremony organised by Hope Centre were Dierdre Moran, Brona Colfer and Mary Murphy.

THE shortest day of the year was an occasion of joy at the Irish National Heritage Park in Ferrycarrig.

The Hope Cancer Support Centre in Enniscorthy celebrated the winter solstice with a ceremony of light and healing.

A large number of people turned up, bringing candles with them to light in the darkness.

The ceremony began with a tree that was bare of decoration and during the evening, participants were invited to place ribbons and decorations on it, symbolising their hopes, intentions and wishes.

The Tree of Hope will remain in the Heritage Park over the New Year and anyone who would like to add their own wish, is welcome to do so.

The moving ceremony also featured meditation, music and song.
