IN THE week that marked the first anniversary of his passing, over 100 runners and walkers took to the hills around Ballyfad for the inaugural Jim Carton Memorial Five Miles Road Race.

UN veteran Jim Carton was synonymous with fitness in North Wexford, and many of those in attendance on Sunday trained with Jim at some stage over the years. Some of his former UN colleagues also attended the event and staged a formation in his honour before the start of the race.

The event was organised by five locals and friends of Jim's, including: Siobhan O'Sullivan, Eddie O'Sullivan, Tanya Tighe, Chris Murray, and Pat Cullen. They were very grateful to Sliabh Bhuide Rovers for doing the timekeeping on the day, as well as the various sponsors for their support, including The Worx Gym, where Jim worked before his passing.

They also thanked all who helped on the day in any way. Refreshments were served in Ballyfad Hall afterwards.

'It was a beautiful day for it,' said Siobhan O'Sullivan. 'It stayed dry until the prizegiving. The first to kilometres were basically up hill, so that was quite a challenge.'

The winners of the men's section were: 1, Brian Kirwan; 2, Paul Gibbons; 3, Patrick Curley. The winners in the women's category were; 1, Niamh O'Ceallaigh; 2, Anna Bush; 3, Danielle Hennessy.

Funds raised through the event going towards a social club for the retired service members in North Wexford.
