The long and distinguished career of retired TD John Browne was honoured last Thursday night in the Riverside Hotel, Enniscorthy.

The hugely popular Enniscorthy man was a TD for Wexford for 33 years and was undefeated in eight consecutive general elections. John first became involved in politics in 1979 when he was elected to Enniscorthy Urban District Council and to Wexford County Council and was first elected to Dáil Éireann in the November, 1982 general election.

Eileen Higgins, Fianna Fail constituency secretary said the retirement event had been organised by the Enniscorthy /Bunclody Comhairle Ceanntair of Fianna Fail under the chairmanship of Cllr Willie Kavanagh.

'There was a massive turnout', said Eileen who said that John and his family had been very touched by people's attendance and good wishes.

Fianna Fail leader Micheal Martin, former MEP Liam Aylward from Kilkenny, all eleven Wexford Fianna Fail councillors and John's son Deputy James Browne were all in attendance on the night.

Speeches on the night came from Deputy Martin, Deputy James Browne and Fianna Fail stalwart and former councillor Peter Byrne who had served as director of elections for six of the eight elections which John had contested.

On the night John was presented with a beautiful hand-crafted wooden wall hanging crafted by Martin O'Rourke of Ballyhogue while wife Judie received flowers.
