A large crowd gathered in the Amber Springs Hotel for the bash, and tributes were paid by Inspector Pat Cody and Detective Sergeant Murt Whelan. Sgt David Ferriter acted as MC. There were presentations from the Garda Representative Association and from the team at Gorey Garda Station.

A presentation was also made to Joe's wife Trish. Among those present on the evening were their sons Dean and Tom.

A native of Tullamore, Co. Offaly, Joe came to Gorey in 1986 and, unusually, Gorey has been the only place where he has served. Well known and highly regarded in the local community, Joe is now embarking on the next phase of his life, and has announced he will run as a candidate for Fianna Fáil in the forthcoming local elections in the Gorey District. All present wished him well in his endeavours.
