Still no decision on most student grants

Published 06/11/2012 | 18:27

MANY Wexford third level students still do not know if they will receive State grants, two months after the start of term.

The situation has been highlighted by Fianna Fail's John Brown who described the situation as alarming. He also noted that most applications that have been processed have been turned down this year by the Department of Education.

The Department has confirmed that 78 per cent of those seeking grants have yet to be given a decision. And the news has not been good for the majority of those who have heard from officials, with three-quarters told that they are not eligible.

'It seems unbelievable to me that the Department has rejected nearly 3 out of every 4 applications from across the country that have been processed to date,' fumed John Browne. ' The Education Minister must urgently explain these massive delays and the alarming rate of rejections.'
