TOP DOG Ralph missed out on the haul of his life at Rosslare Europort on Sunday night.
The sniffer dog was off duty when cannabis resin with an estimate street value of €500,000 was seized from the tyres of a vehicle which was in a container passing through Rosslare Harbour.
A 68-year-old Irish man was arrested at the scene. He was taken into custody at Wexford Garda Station.
' There was no sniffer dog involved this time. The drugs were discovered following a scan of the container by Revenue's mobile scanner,' said a spokesperson for the Revenue Commissioners.
Ralph was reported to be enjoying some down time in his kennel at the time of the seizure, but the 22- month- old springer spaniel has had better days at the office.
Just three weeks after he joined the customs team at Rosslare he gave an indication to his handler, Dennis Lawlor, that led to the discovery of € 319,000 worth of cannabis resin.
And similarly, just five days later he sniffed out a further €29,000 worth of the drug in the battery of a car just off the ferry.
But on the occasion of Sunday night's seizure, the prized pooch was off duty and it was up to his human colleagues to detect the load using the mobile scanner.
