BEING given the benefit of the Probation Act, and avoiding a conviction for theft, will 'only happen once', warned Judge Gerard Haughton at Gorey District Court last week.
He made the comment in the case of Stephen Murray (41) of 8 Fernhill, Arklow, who was before the court charged with stealing a hoodie worth €10 from Heaton's Department Store on Gorey's Main Street, on March 15 last. The court heard he paid for one hoodie and then picked up another one on his way out.
He said he'd been in an accident several months previously and lost half his hand. 'I wasn't thinking straight and did something stupid,' he said.
