Packed house enjoyed choral group's end of year concert

THERE was a packed house at The Ashdown Park Hotel in Gorey for the end of year Gorey Choral Group concert.

The audience was treated to the sound of two choirs for the price of one, as special guests on the evening were the Wexford Festival Singers. When both choirs were on stage together, there were around 80 singers filling the hall with song, under the direction of Eithne Corrigan, Musical Director.

Pre-show mulled wine, nibbles on the tables, and a giant raffle helped keep everyone in the festive mood and the Choral Group was delighted with the response from the audience on the night.

There were solo turns from Brian Murphy and Miriam Mulhall. 'It was a lovely night,' said a spokesperson for the group. 'This is our only fundraiser for the group during the year, and it helps with our running costs.' A big thank you was sent to all who supported the evening.

This was the second time in a week that both choirs performed together. Gorey Choral Group sang with the Wexford Festival Singers in the Friary in Wexford a few days previously.

It was a busy past year for the 40 members of the Gorey Choral Group. They won awards at competitions in Arklow and Cork. In fact, they were given a special award in Arklow, for winning five years in a row.

They were also out and about over the festive season, performing before Christmas parties in The Ashdown Park Hotel; at a free concert in Gorey Library; and at 11 a.m. Christmas Day Mass in St. Michael's Church, Gorey, with a solo performance by renowned tenor Declan Kelly.

Gorey Choral Group is always delighted to welcome new members. They rehearse each Monday night from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. in The Ashdown Park Hotel. Contact any choir member for information, or sit in for a rehearsal. The Choral Group sent its thanks to The Ashdown Park Hotel for its ongoing support.
