Hasn't paid off debt for car fire

Published 18/03/2014 | 05:34

A MAN facing a bill of €5,000 after he set a car on fire told the District Court that he was having trouble paying off the debt. Karl O'Toole of Ballyroe in Glenbrien was allowed nine months to come up with the money when convicted of arson in May of last year.

However, he contacted the gardaí in January to tell them that he did not have the full amount. Inspector Pat Cody told last Wednesday's court sitting that nothing had actually been paid, though O'Toole was present with an envelope containing €2,500.

He stated that he needed another year to clear the debt, adding that he had just started a new job. He formally applied for postponement of the 10-month suspended sentence which was handed down last year.

Judge Gerard Haughton put the matter back to September 10, indicating that he expected a 'reasonable amount' to be paid by that date. The original offence occurred at Borrmount on October 14, 2011.
