A MAN who tried to steal a bottle of Hennessey from Dunnes Stores in Gorey, but then had second thoughts when he saw security staff watching him, was fined in the District Court last week for having a tinfoil-lined bag.
Luksas Donatas (19) of 18 Chipping Terrace, Ongar, Dublin 15, and also with an address given as 44 Castlegate Grove, Adamstown, Dublin, admitted making the bag with tinfoil and tape.
He wasn't in court to answer the charge of possession of the bag at Dunnes Stores, Gorey, on August 24 last.
Garda Gavin Cahill said he received a report from Dunnes Stores of a man acting suspiciously, and went down to the store. However, as he travelled down The Avenue, he saw a man matching the description given, and he stopped. The defendant had a large blue bag with a foillined bag inside.
At Gorey Garda Station, Luksas Donatas admitted what the bag was for. The Dunnes Stores staff had seen him put a bottle of Hennessey into the bag and then take it out and put it back on the shelf.
He admitted everything in the Garda interview, saying he had intended stealing the bottle, and that he made the tin foil bag himself as 'it stops the alarm going off'. 'He saw security staff watching him so he took the bottle out,' said Garda Cahill.
Judge Haughton fined the defendant €400.
