Exceptional day at the sales

IT WAS a busy day at the 33rd annual Show and Sale of Bullocks and Bulls in Carnew Mart recently.
Some 970 cattle passed through the ring, and David Quinn of Carnew Mart said there was exceptional trade for all stock on the day, and there was a full clearance.
He said that beef cattle met a very firm trade, with beef bullocks selling to €2,000, and generally from €2.05 to €2.43 /kg.
First prize in the beef class went to P. J. Farrell from Clonegal, for a Limousin Bullock weighing 820 kg sold at €2,000 to N. Grufferty, Dunbia. Pat Kirwan of Barntown won the Store Bullock Class with a Belgian Blue Bullock weighing 684 Kg, selling for €1,820 to John Kelly, APB Waterford.
The Weanling Bull trade saw strong Northern and export demand with 50 per cent of the weanlings on offer bought for export, and prices in the range of €2.10 to a top of €3.22 / kg. Andy McEvoy had first prize with a CHX BB Bull, 500 kg, sold for €1,460 to Viastar. Other prize winners included: Best pair of Beef Bullocks, Brian Doyle, Monaseed, 2 LMBlks, 662 kg at €1,430; Best Non Cont. Factory Blk, Michael Osborne, Carnew, 1AA, 726 kg at €1,540; Best 2 Store Blks over 450 kg, 2 BB BLK 555 kg at €1210, Alvin Hill, Gorey; Best 2 Store Blks under 450 kg, 2 BB Blks, 422 kg at €1,055, Derry Rothwell, Tinahely.
