Eoin runs into athletics legend Stephen Kiprotich
THE organiser of Wexford's half marathon Eoin Ryan rubbed shoulders in Uganda last week with the famous runner Stephen Kiprotich.
Eoin presented the London Olympic gold medallist with a jersey which he hopes he might wear when he is training. The Wexfordman is in Africa for a fortnight, preparing for the Marathon des Sables, the world's toughest race.
He wanted to get some practice running in the heat of Africa so he paid a visit to his sister who lives in the Ugandan capital, Kampala.
'Being a keen runner I was keen to arrange a photograph with Uganda's most famous son,' said Eoin who is a personal development coach and the author of motivational book 'Outcome Run.'
'Kiprotich is a national hero so getting a photo was a big coup as he has a very busy schedule.'
Eoin bought Kiprotich and his entourage dinner in an Italian restaurant in Kampala.
'He is a very humble guy, shy and soft spoken,' he said. 'We had a great conversation which surprised his friends. He normally isn't much of a talker.'
The pair exchanged contact details and Eoin is now hopeful of doing some life coaching with the world-class runner in the future. Kiprotich is the current Olympic and World champion for the marathon distance.
He won gold in London at the 2012 Olympics and won the World Championships in Moscow in 2013.
The Marathon des Sables is
on in April and the Wexfordman and the Ugandan have promised to catch up on Skype after the races to chat about their performances.
