Club cancels festive swim as a mark of respect

AS NEWS broke on Christmas morning of the tragedy on the Red Row in Courtown the previous night, John Lawlor's local soccer club, Courtown Hibs, cancelled their annual Christmas Day Swim as a mark of respect.

John played with the club up to ten or fifteen years ago, and he still maintained strong links with the club. He often talked with friends about his playing days, and the goals that were scored.

Indeed, he would have attended the Christmas Day swim regularly, as it has been an annual fundraiser for the club for forty years.

Two club members entered the water in the harbour on Christmas Day, just to keep the tradition unbroken, but John's family were very much in the thoughts and prayers of everyone as spectators and swimmers were informed that the main swim would not go ahead this year.
