FINES were imposed at Gorey District Court last week on the owner of a Chinese takeaway for employing two illegal workers.
Zhang Quan Yu, trading as Yong Fu, 10 Lower Esmonde Street, was charged with employing one worker who didn't have a work permit on January 21, 22, and 23 last year, and employing another worker without a permit on February 12 and 13 last year.
The case was taken by the Department of Jobs, Enterprise, and Innovation, and the court was told he handed over timesheets which indicated the days that had been worked.
The employer said his wife had returned home to celebrate the Chinese New Year, and he needed help in the restaurant. He'd been promised by the second worker that he had a permit and would produce it.
Solicitor Doran O'Toole said his client, a married father of two, was under a lot of financial pressure, having recently acquired the premises.
Judge Haughton imposed three fines of €150 each in relation to the first person, and two fines of €250 each, in relation to the second worker.
