THE Carnew Mart 29th annual Show and Sale of Bullocks and Bulls took place last Saturday, February 6. There was a huge entry with 1,125 head on offer and very good demand for beef, stores and weanling bulls, with strong Northern Ireland, factory and exporter demand for quality lots.
Beef bullocks generally sold between ¤400 and ¤500 over the kilo with up to ¤650 over in some cases.
The champion of the show was a weanling bull entered by Pat Whelan of Ballinglen. It weighed in at 410kg and sold for ¤1,420 to Kevin Quinn, Quinn International exporters.
The champion beef bullock was a LMX shown by Leslie Dixon of Gorey. It weighed 750kg and sold to Tom Boland of Liffey Meats, Hacketstown for ¤1,400.
The prize winners were as follows: Best cont. Factory Bullock: 1, Leslie Dixon, 1 LMX 750kg at ¤1,400; 2, Michael Clarke, 1 LM 696kg at ¤1,350; 3, Sean Doyle, 1 LM 640kg at ¤1,220.
Best 4 Continental Factory Bullock: 1, Norman Spencer, 4 LM 808kg at ¤1,410; 2, John Sheridan, 4 CH 660kg ¤1,100; 3, Peter Behan, 4BB, 865kg at ¤1,380.
Best Non Cont. Factory Bullock: 1, Peter Behan, 1HH Blk 900kg at ¤1,400.
Best Pair continental Bullock over 550kg: 1, John Sheridan, 2 LM 790kg at ¤1,290.
Best Pair of Store Bullocks over 450kg: 1, Sam Horan, 2 BB Blk, 549kg at ¤1,020.
Best Weanling Bull: 1, Pat Whelan, 1BB 410kg at ¤1,420; 2, John Byrne, 1BB 400kg at ¤1,400; 3, Larry Egan, 1BB 502kg at ¤1,000.
