Assault case is struck out after €10,000 handed over

A COMPENSATION payment of €10,000 helped a Ballycanew resident avoid a criminal conviction and jail sentence after an unprovoked attack in a Dublin nightclub, Dublin District Court heard last week.

A guilty plea was entered by Garry Rynhart (23) of Ballycanew, in the court last year.

He was charged with assault causing harm at the nightclub on March 3, 2010.

The court previously heard he knocked into a table where the complainant was sitting. When the man looked round, he received a punch to his face, knocking him to the ground and fracturing his nose. He also suffered numbness to his cheek for a long time afterwards.

Rynhart agreed to pay €10,000 to the victim, and with the payment completed, Judge Cormac Dunne said he hoped the defendant, who had a clean record, had learnt a lesson. He struck out the case.

The court heard in mitigation, the defendant began drinking heavily after dropping out of a college course in civil engineering and becoming depressed. He later got work in Poland and was helping support his family.
