'Aggressive' man claims knife was for bag of coal

A MAN found in possession of a knife on the Main Street in Gorey was discovered in an agitated state by Gardaí. Officers were called to XtraVision on September 18 where a verbal altercation was going on. Accused Martin McDonagh of 23 Clonattin Village was shouting obscenities in front of members of the public.

He continued to be aggressive after the arrival of the Gardaí, though they told him to calm down.

McDonagh was arrested and a fourinch blade came to light.

Defending solicitor Mark Quinn explained that his client had used the knife the previous night to open a bag of coal. Mr. Quinn maintained that the 50-year-old accused became agitated after he was assaulted by three men in the street. Fines of €150 each were recorded for illegal possession of a knife and for threatening/abusive behaviour in a public place.
