Ferns musician Denny Davitt has a special reason to mark Mother's Day on Sunday. The main man behind the Heartbeats band is releasing a new single, his first in almost 20 years.
And the song is called 'Mother, Precious Memories' in honour of his own late parent.
Rita Davitt, wife of Christy Davitt, died of cancer in 1996, having heard her son perform the song before she passed away. She made Denny promise to record it but it was such an emotional challenge that it has taken him till now to compile the single.
At last 'Mother, Precious Memories' has been recorded at Jonathan Owens' studio in Longford, with an extra verse added. It features Denny on vocals and his son Paddy on saxophone.
It is already available on iTunes and it is receiving radio play around the Ireland and abroad. The CD version will be published on Sunday, March 30 – which just happens to be Mother's Day.
The fun will begin at around 9 p.m. in Gorey's Ashdown Park hotel, where the Heartbeats will be joined by guests including Tony Davitt and the Moynihan Brothers.
'I wrote the song back in 1993 or 1994,' said Denny. 'She asked me not to give it to anyone else and made me promise to record it.'
Now that he has honoured his promise he intends to make greater use of his gifts as a composer. He reckons that he has more than 20 of his own songs in his locker, all waiting to be recorded and put together in an album.
