THE GOVERNMENT has allocated €1.24 million to carry out emergency repairs on the piers in Courtown.
Minister for Public Expenditure and Reform Brendan Howlin confirmed to Cllr. Robert Ireton that the money will be made available to carry out the essential repairs.
'The North Pier is completely shattered,' said Cllr. Ireton, welcoming the allocation. 'People have to stay off the end of both piers at present.'
Both piers were seriously damaged in recent storms , even before last Wednesday's storm hit. A section of the capping on the North Pier was torn off, leaving metal rods hanging in mid air.
Large cracks developed in both piers, leaving them in a highly dangerous state. Minister Howlin confirmed at the weekend that €1.24 million has been allocated to carry out the works.€55,000 has also been allocated to carry out repairs to the pier in Cahore.
