THE RESPONSE to Wexford's Christmas Shoebox Appeal has been reduced by the recession.

This year, 6,691 charity shoeboxes containing festive gifts for children in western Romania were dispatched from Co Wexford. That's less than half the 14,000 boxes that left the county in 2007.

' The number has been dropping steadily for the past five years,' said co-ordinator Sue Tobin.

Sue, who has been running the shoebox appeal locally for the past 17 years, issued a big thank you to those who did contribute.
