Stephen Rixon (20) from Castlemoyle Heights, New Ross, said he thoroughly enjoyed the experience even though he didn't progress in the competition.

Stephen performed the Evanescence song 'Bring Me To Life' on 'The Voice Ireland', which was broadcast to an audience of 800,000 people on Sunday February 9.

Unfortunately no judges turned for Stephen, but when they saw him they were all gobsmacked that he was in fact a male.

Dolores O'Riordan exclaimed: 'You're a dude!? That was pretty phenomenal.'

Kian Egan said he didn't know how Stephen hit this notes and Bressie advised Stephen to take his singing more seriously as he feels there is something there to work with.

Stephen has revealed that he studied singing over two years in his teens and performed in church choirs and with local drama groups and musical societies in New Ross while growing up.

Having watched The Voice over the past two years he decided to submit an application and was put forward to enter into the competition.

'My voice is naturally falsetto and I would normally sing opera songs. I didn't think they would like full opera so I decided to do a pop song with an operatic twist.'

Although the day of his performance was very long and nerve racking, Stephen said he is delighted that he went forward.

'I really enjoyed it; it was a great experience even if you didn't get through you don't lose anything. I got advice from the judges too.'

A Second Year pupil at St Pat's College in Dublin, he said he doesn't know if he will go on 'The Voice' again as his singing style isn't suited to the competition.

'I don't know if I would try it again. I've got great feedback and a good few people wrote to me on my Facebook page and texted me and the video is on Youtube where it's gotten a lot of views.'
