BALBRIGGAN CC finally met their match in this Leinster Schools Junior Development Cup quarter-final as hosts Ratoath Community College brought their journey in the competition to an end.The Balbriggan boys were coming off the back of three impressive wins in previous rounds, and although Ratoath opened the scoring with a fine try, Balbriggan soon settled down and from a lineout scrum half and captain Paddy Gibbs drove over from close range and David Goodman duly converted - 7-5 to the visitors. Within three minutes Ratoath were awarded a penalty 40 metres out and they moved it quickly and scored to make it 127, but Balbriggan scored again when a ball was passed out to centre Tobe Eze from a scrum just inside the Ratoath half. Eze side-stepped and twisted out of several tackles to touch down under the posts, with Goodman again converting - 14-12 to Balbriggan. Ratoath took charge, however, with three more touchdowns in quick succession, and then from the last play of the half, a silly restart from Balbriggan was collected by their full back who ran all of 60 metres to touch down, leaving the visitors shell-shocked and 38-14 in arrears. The Fingal boys started the second half well and in the fourth minute they scored a superb try. Following a scrum they drove forward through several phases, leading to Gibbs scoring his second try. Ratoath quickly responded with their seventh try, only for this score to be cancelled out immediately when Goodman made a superb break following a scrum in midfield. The score was now 43-24 and the way both teams were playing it was still anyone's game. However, with injuries mounting up Balbriggan lost their shape and in the space of the next 10 minutes they conceded three more tries.
