NAOMH Mearnóg pushed Ballyboden St Endas all the way and might have even forced a win in what was a dramatic contest played at O';Toole Park on Saturday evening.Missing key forwards in Aiden Kenny (a hamstring had ruled him as a starter) and Dublin minor Shane Carthy, Mearnóg were certainly up against it before a ball was even thrown in. When in 2007 these two teams had met, Endas were emphatic 18 point winners but on this occasion they just about left with a victory intact. In the end, an injury time point from Mark McCabe was sufficient to see Ballyboden through but only after Mearnóg had had strong claims for a penalty turned down. Mearnóg had begun the game very confidently with Johnny Dolan raising the white flag within forty seconds with Ryan O'Sullivan then finding the back of the net in the next attack of the game. However Ballyboden were back in contention on four minutes later when a fine team move which included Dublin midfielder Michael Dara Macauley saw Darren O'Reilly finish past the keeper. Ballyboden added two further points after that before Mearnóg registered 1-3 without reply with Kevin O'Brien very influential in midfield. This culminated in a 14th minute goal from Sean Kenny who flicked home a pass from Francis McGowan before Ballyboden rallied with two points to leave it 2-5 to 1-6 at the interval to Mearnóg. The two teams then traded a point apiece before Kenny netted a second goal and the Mearnóg management team were then up in arms after a push on Ryan O'Sullivan had gone unpunished. Ballyboden were to draw level by the 59th minutes with McCabe firing over two before Darragh Nelson was dismissed for a second yellow with a minute to go. O'Brien would then fire Mearnóg back in front with a long range only for Ballyboden to replay with late points from Simon Lambert and McCabe.
