THE Balbriggan Community Colleges senior rugby team got their North Dublin Cup campaign off to a flying start last Friday when they played away to St Kevin's on the Astroturf pitches at the DCC in Clontarf.
NORTH DUBLIN CUP ST KEVIN'S 5 BALBRIGGAN CC 15
Having made an early exit from the Leinster Schools Cup earlier in the season, the Fingal boys were determined to get this tournament off to a winning start. Balbriggan got off to a flyer when in the fifth minute a great heel against the head on a fivemetre scrum allowed scrum half Ross McGrath to drive over for a 5-0 lead. Balbriggan showed a little more composure and control, especially at the breakdown, and this lead to Balbriggan's second try in the 15th minute when, from a turnover on the St Kevin's 22, the ball was moved quickly out wide and finished off superbly by lock forward Vitor Alkmin. St Kevin's began to play to the conditions and in the 25th minute they drove forward with some excellent rucking and mauling. From a five-metre scrum their number eight picked and crashed over to make it 10-5 at the interval. The second period was a scrappy affair, with a lot of unforced errors from both teams. It was from one of these unforced errors mid-way through half that Balbriggan sealed their victory. Captain and flanker Liam Thornton pounced on a dropped passback from a five-metre lineout to clinch victory for the Balbriggan boys. Despite the incessant rain forwards Alkmin, Thornton and Tosin Toki, together with backs Conor White and Padraig Hickey, shone through on this very damp and dreary day. Balbriggan CC: Vitor Alkmin, Jamou Akamtoye, Essie Bodurri, Shane Carroll, Folarin Odulami, Toba Toki, Liam Thornton, Tosin Toki, Ross McGrath, Paddy Gibbs, Dean Fox, Padraig Hickey, Ciaran Hickey, Stephen Crawley, Conor White, Stephen O'Byrne and Stephen Omatade.
