ST SYLVESTER'S SETANTA
ST SYLVESTER'S achieved senior B status for the first time in the club's history with two late frees from Martin Ormonde ensuring a famous victory for Tommy Naughton's men.
Played in Clonshaugh on what was a pleasant Saturday evening, the two teams hurled with great intensity and indeed the game was still up for grabs right up until the last few moments. However, the introduction of young stars, Kieran Falvey and Dublin minor, Kevin O'Flynn, was to prove crucial as Syls withstood a determined charge from the Ballymun men. Setanta certainly put it up to their opponents early with Anton Keating was a handful at full forward. Donal Breathnach's free taking was also a big feature and it was the wing forward who drove over the first score for Setanta. A determined charge from dual player, Russell Cleere then set up a free for Martin Ormonde before a good show of pace from the Setanta number 10 set up Keating for his second score of the game.
And although Ormonde was to make it a one point game once more from a free, Setanta, who were playing with the aid of a strong breeze, then drove over three unanswered scores. Syls regrouped, however, with Ormonde showing nerves of steel to send over successive frees before Andrew Richardson registered a fine point on the run. And by the 27th minute, Sylvesters had drawn level through Stephen Keogh before Breathnach, having come through at pace, drove past Hillary Murray Hession, in the Sylvesters goal. A
n additional point from the Setanta centre forward made it 1-7 to 0-6 at the break. However, Setanta were right back in it after the interval when Barry Kiely played a diagonal ball into Stephen Keogh who having turned the keeper, converted into the empty net. That spurred Syls on with both Alan Morris and Kiely finding the target to put the Malahide men ahead for the first time. It was nip and tuck and that with Ormond cancelling out a number of Setanta scores, the teams were all square heading into the final ten minutes.
But having edged back in front through Ormonde, Sylvesters grabbed a crucial goal when Richardson got on the end of a sideline ball to convert from close range with eight minutes to go. It was game-on again when Keating breached the Syls defence, but they held their nerve with Ormonde converting successive frees, the second coming after good work by Falvey. ST SYLVESTERS: Hillary Murray Hession, Ian McCafferty, Kevin Clarke, Alan Morris, Enda Flaherty, Daire Flaherty, Ronan Kennedy, Russell Cleere, Andrew Richardson 1-2, Conor McCafferty, David Casey, Barry Kiely 0-1, Stephen Keogh 1-1, Martin Ormonde 0-9(all frees), Gareth McGrath.
