THE previous week's encouraging victory over Terenure proved to be a false dawn as Skerries crashed out of the Leinster AIL Division 2A/2B Cup in somewhat demoralising fashion at Holmpatrick.
SKERRIES 22 BECTIVE 51
This competition, exclusively for Leinster-based clubs playing in the lower divisions of the AllIreland League, is designed to smooth the path back to the AIL after the Christmas break, but from a Skerries point of view Saturday's game displayed all the evidence of an indulgent festive season - stodgy. Plenty of mistakes were made during the 80 minutes, mostly by the hosts, and after an early intercept try by the visitors the game went downhill for the home side. Skerries did fight back to within 10 points in the second half and the home supporters briefly cheered up, but Bective - from Division 2A, one level up from their hosts - kept the pressure on and the new-look home team combination wilted. This result ended Skerries' involvement in the competition, which is due to conclude during March or April. On the plus side, John Murphy and his coaching staff will be pleased to have a full squad to select from for the resumption of the AIL which sees Skerries travel to Sundays Well on Saturday January 19th. They currently lie in eighth place, two spots ahead of Sundays Well, and will be looking to build on their comfortable home win over Ards in their final game prior to the festive season. SKERRIES: Paul Devitt, Mark Hewitt, John Gavin, Colin Doyle; Conal Keane, Emmet Branigan; Mark Nally, Chris Tonge, Ross McCorry; Joe Glennon, Martin Provisors; Rick O'Mahony, Kevin O'Connell, Thomas O'Hare. Replacements: John Condron, Eamonn Gavin, Eamonn Hartford, Stephen Scully, Sean Dempsey.
