CUCHULAINN Minors made the long trip to Cuala last Sunday and came away with an impressive win to put themselves in a strong position in the Minor Championship group.
Josh Connell steadied any first game nerves with a slick point in the opening minute and although Cuala leveled from the kick out, Niall Hughes restored the lead with a brace of frees.
Cuchulainn were making light of the wet conditions and further points from Josh Connell and a brace by the impressive Kieran McKitterick put the away team in a commanding position. However, it took a magnificent point blank save by Cathal Niall to keep the lead intact. The teams then swapped points before Niall Hughes fourth point of the half put Cuchulainn up by six at the break, 0-8 to 0-2.
The second period opened with a text book score by Ryan Caul following great work by Kieran McKitterick and when the duo hooked up again for another fine point, the away side were eight points clear. The game petered out somewhat after that with the conditions worsening and Cuchulainn more intent on defending their lead than adding to it.
However the small band of Cuchulainn supporters were treated to that rarest of sights, a point from Kieran McKitterich with his right foot! This was sandwiched between two other points from McKitterick. Cuala's pressure finally told in the latter stages with a well taken goal from close range and a point but a great score by Conor Murphy killed off any hopes of a comeback and with Niall Harford and Dermot Leech outstanding in defence, the Cuchulainn saw out the final minutes.
