Yeboah-like strike helps lift Swords

SWORDS Celtic moved top of the Major Sunday with a helping hand from Shane Byrne who scored with a sublime strike on his full debut.

Celtic, although missing Paul Shiels who is on GAA championship duty with his local team back home in Monaghan, got off to a terrific start on two minutes when in-form striker Robbie Farrell dispossessed a defender inside the penalty area and chipped the keeper. Maynooth levelled on 25 minutes, but great play from Gareth Lougheed was to hand Celtic back the advantage just before the interval. Lougheed put in a superb tackle on the Maynooth left full on half-way and then released Farrell who duly slotted past the keeper. Barry Caulfield made it three on the hour mark after Farrell's shot had been blocked and then came the goal of the game on 80 minutes. Reminiscent of Tony Yeboah's wonder goal for Leeds United against Liverpool in the mid 1990s, Byrne hit the ball from 25 yards out to give the keeper no chance. SWORDS CELTIC: Brat Tucker, Bernie Smith, Niall Kinsella, Ben McQuillan, Adam Hanley, Jason Smith, Mark Gibson, Barry Caulfield, Shane Byrne, Robbie Farrell, Gareth Lougheed.
