Valley hit Ports for six with stunning display

A FINE headed goal from Peter Akor was the highlight of this win for the home side on Saturday.
Akor gave a terrific display on the day, proving a tenancious tackler in midfield while also linking up well with the attack. Jonathan Bayes was another who endeared himself as he put in a series of crunching tackles in defence. Nonetheless the visitors gave a very good account of themselves particularly in the first half where Tom O'Sullivan was very prominent down the right wing.
They were always chasing the game once Shane O'Connor had put the Valley in front with a terrific drive from the edge of the box after Josh Boyle's original shot had been blocked. And then off a fine cross from the industrious Jack Cole, Michael Harris' flick header went just wide of the keeper's far post. The two linked again a few moments later with Harris snapping up a chance inside the box after Portmarnock had failed to fully clear their lines.
Cole then saw an ambitious left footed effort come back off the post before Josh Boyle connected sweetly to extend his team's advantage. The home side continued to press with Rui Lopes' ambitious overhead kick just clearing the top of the crossbar before a Portmarnock player converted past his own keeper off a Rivervalley corner from the right. And then after that Akor struck with a brilliantly directed header after Harry Maher had picked him out with a wonderful deep header and with Maher in terrific form down the right, Rivervalley were always in command.
