Thunder stars to the fore as Griffith win College cup
Swords Thunder's star players were all to the fore as Griffith College Dublin stormed to an emphatic victory in the National Basketball College Committee Men's Division 1 Final at Oblate Hall last Wednesday.
Griffith College 90 NUI Galway 60
This was sweet revenge in what was a repeat of last year's decider which NUIG won, and this time Griffith were in control from the beginning, with Thunder trio Conroy Baltimore, Alex Calvo and Charlie Coombes dominating to drive them into a 29-18 lead at the end of the first quarter.
NUIG put in a hard-working second quarter to stem the tide and at the half-way point they were still just about in contention, with 10 points between them, 49-39.
Despite the Galway side's efforts, though, it just wasn't enough in the face of the well-drilled and well-oiled Griffith machine, with Justin Goldsborough and Jose Maria Gil Narbon - together with coach Dave Baker - ensuring the Dublin college didn't take their foot off the pedal.
With yet more dunks and some superb three-point shooting they opened up a 69-48 gap after three quarters, and their advantage continued to grow in the final period as NUIG were unable to cope with Griffith's pacy and thrilling offensive play.
