Alan Ryan

SKERRIES man Alan Ryan did himself and his country proud by achieving a podium finish at the World Ironman Championships in Hawaii - for the second time in a row.

Ryan came fifth in his age group when he last competed in the event in 2009, and on this occasion he performed even better to finish third in the 45-49 category. After a relatively slow 3.8km swim, Alan passed 105 of his competitors on the bike to finish the 180km course 16th in his age division. A superb 3 hour 10 minute marathon split moved him up to third place overall.
