Tourism upsurge for Battle of Clontarf

IN April it was reported that Swords will see huge tourism potential from events to commemorate the 1,000th anniversary of the Battle of Clontarf in 2014 because of the town's links with Brian Boru.

That is the view of Cllr Darragh Butler (FF) who has urged the council to take advantage of the upcoming anniversary and improve some of the town's important heritage sites in readiness for 2014. Cllr Butler asked the council to 'ensure that Swords tourism benefits from the 1,000 anniversary of the 1014 Battle of Clontarf when Brian Boru's body and that of his son Murragh are believed to have been taken from the battlefield at Clontarf and waked by the monks in Swords where St. Columba's Church now stands'.
