IT was a case of 'double-tops' when two pals from the same school in Balbriggan celebrated scoring maximum points in their Leaving Certificate.

Close friends and students at Balbriggan Loreto, Megan Watson and Sophie Donnelly both achieved a maximum 625 points in the Leaving Certificate and in both cases, the extraordinary results came as a complete shock to them. 'I'm over the moon – I'm completely shocked,' Megan told the Fingal Independent, reacting to her incredible results.

'I have worked for it but I wasn't expecting anything like this,' she added. Her friend, Sophie Donnelly scored a remarkable seven A1 grades in the exam and said her results were 'hugely unexpected'.

Principal of the school, Edward Fynes, told the Fingal Independent that he and the school's staff were delighted with the overall results in the school.

He said this year's results at Balbriggan Loreto were 'fantastic' with some 25 students scoring over 500.
