A BALBRIGGAN teenager and her mum held a successful fundraising coffee morning and bag pack last weekend in aid of Heart Children Ireland.

Rebecca Harrold (13) and her mum Vanessa opened the door of their home in Flemington Park to host the coffee morning, which went so well, it carried on well into the afternoon.

The following day, Rebecca and four of her friends held a successful bag pack at SuperValu in Balbriggan for the same charity.

In total, Rebecca and her friends raised €750 for the charity from both events.

A First Year student at Loreto Balbriggan, Rebecca wanted to host a fundraising event for the Heart Children Ireland charity as she herself has had a heart condition since she was born.

'Heart Children Ireland have been of fantastic support to us since Rebecca was nine weeks old when it was discovered she had a heart condition,' Vanessa told the Fingal Independent.

'They have always been there at the other end of the phone for advice and help and its great that they are there for us.'

Vanessa said Rebecca had wanted to take part in other events such as a beach swim at Christmas and a Stay Awake event to raise money for the charity but insurance would not cover her for the events.

'So as she really wanted to give something back to the charity, we decided on the coffee morning and the bag pack,' explained Vanessa.

Vanessa's sister Pauline, sister-in-law Debbie Murray and Miriam Guildea helped baked the plenty of cakes, bread and cupcakes that were on sale at the coffee morning while Rebecca's friends Ella Egan, Cara Dowling, Alison Downes and Abbey Markey helped with the bag pack.

'We were refilling cups of tea and coffee right through until 3.30 p.m. that day!,' said a delighted Vanessa.

Rebecca is so determined to keep her fundraising efforts going for the charity that she is planning on taking part in Dublin's Mini-Marathon in June.

'She's determined to do it and no doubt she will,' said a proud Vanessa.

Rebecca and Vanessa would like to thank local businesses Gleeson's Butchers, Sernity Beauty in The Naul, Seus Wash & Blowdry, Forever Beauty Salon, Exile Clothing, Sean Brown Butchers, McFadden's, Wise Owl Bookshop, Wishes Gift Shop, the three local chemists and Around a Pound for supplying balloons on the day.

Heart Children Ireland is a nationwide support group for parents and families of children with a Congenital Heart Disorder.
