SWORDS courthouse looks set to close next January after the Courts Service published a proposal to shut the courthouses in both Swords (pictured) and Balbriggan and transfer their business to Blanchardstown and the Phoenix Park.

Swords-based solicitor, John Hennessy reacted to the news with disbelief and said: 'It is a nail in the coffin for both towns to lose such a vital service.'

He said that closing both courthouses was a 'ridiculous proposal' and he vowed to lodge a formal objection to the plans. A spokesperson for gardaí in Swords said he was 'disappointed' by the Court Service proposals and said the move would remove an 'important source of interaction with the community' from local gardaí.
