A RUSH woman who lost three-and-a-half stone is now showing the way forward to other people who are unhappy about their weight.

Sinead Donnelly lost the weight when she joined Slimming World in February 2012 after years of battling with her size and trying numerous diets but never managing to keep the weight off.

Sinead became involved in Slimming World after she heard about the classes from a local shopkeeper.

'I went along and could not believe, as I approached the group doors, I could hear people having fun, lots of laughter and smiling faces, the minute I walked in I was offered a cup of tea and a magazine to read and I knew instantly that I could fit right in!' she said.

Sinead first became aware of her weight when she was just eight years old. She was out shopping with her mother for her Communion dress when she was told by a shopkeeper: 'Sorry we don't cater for your size'. This is when her bubble burst.

She knew she was the biggest girl at her school, but a specially made tailored communion dress came as a big shock.

'Twenty years down the line I can still hear her say it' said Sinead .'But after wearing my specially tailored dress, nothing changed.'

As Sinead grew, so did her waistline. Several failed attempts at diets left her feeling that she would be overweight forever.

'I've spent my life wanting to wear a rainbow of colours but only ever buying black clothes to hide what was underneath, feeling frumpy and shy,' said Sinead. 'I never changed how I dealt with food – it was both a friend and an enemy; loving it as I ate it but the guilt and tightening waist band left me feeling blue'.

When Sinead heard about Slimming World, it sounded like the perfect solution, as she would be free to eat real food but still be able to lose weight.

'The family favourite meal is homemade burgers and unlimited amounts of Slimming World chips – its Saturday night tea in our house every week now, the whole family eats the same!'

Sinead believes that the support of the consultant and her fellow slimmers is what sets Slimming World apart. She feels that having her consultant pick up the phone and check in with her in the early weeks was the key to her success.

Now, after conquering her own weight problems, Sinead's life has changed.

'I'm no longer hiding away,' she said. 'I'm wearing my rainbow of colours.'

Rather than resting on her laurels, however, Sinead now wants to put her experience to good use and help others to feel as amazing as she does.

She has become a Slimming World consultant in Rush and will be hosting classes from 5.30 to 7.30 p.m. every Tuesday in Rush Community Centre, starting on July 30. For more information, call Sinead on (086) 1067070 or call in on Tuesday night.
