A GROUP of runners and walkers in Balbriggan is bidding to raise €3,000 to start a weekly 'Park Run' at Ardgillan Castle.

Balbriggan Roadrunners are behind the bid to bring Ireland's seventh such park run to Balbriggan.

There is currently a weekly park run in Malahide, six nationwide and many more worldwide, all co-ordinated through the website, www.parkrun.ie.

A park run is an organised and free weekly 5km timed run that takes place in parks around the world every Saturday morning.

They are open to everyone, run voluntarily, and are safe and easy to take part in. These events take place in parkland surroundings and encourage people of every ability to take part; from beginners to Olympians and juniors to those with more experience.

A spokesperson for the club said: 'In order to do this we need to cover 50 per cent of the start-up costs which amounts to €3,000 so we are currently looking for sponsorship from business and people in the community, particularly in the North Fingal area.

Any individual, company or club that wishes to support the group can sponsor individual runners, write a cheque payable to Balbriggan Roadrunners or lodge/transfer donations electronically to the club account: AIB Balbriggan, Sort Code: 93-20-19, Account No: 36875014

You can contact the club through its Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/balbriggan.roadrunners
