Reservations about Martello Tower plans

THE council is to meet with Skerries Tourism to discuss having some kind of heritage centre at the local Martello Tower but the local authority has expressed some reservations about the idea.

Cllr Tom O'Leary (FG) suggested the idea and said that he believed it had the backing of some senior management at the council.

But the official council report on the issue, cast some doubts on the idea. It states: 'The Heritage Centre at Skerries Mills performs an important function to promote the heritage of the Skerries area. The funding of an additional heritage centre in such close proximity to the Mills is not considered warranted at this stage.

'If however, additional emphasis on some aspect of the local heritage is recommended, this can be provided for through improved signage or interpretative material.

'In this regard engagement, with the Skerries Tourism Group may be beneficial and would be very useful and will be arranged.'
