THE Order of Malta Ambulance Corp, which has been in existence in Swords for more than 10 years, is now beginning a recruitment drive for new members.
The voluntary first aid and emergency services provider assists at local events such as the St Patrick's Day festivities, the Fingal historical events at Swords Castle, the Skerries road races and numerous other public sporting events through the wider Fingal area.
'We have been very visible at sporting events and other events throughout Swords and the Fingal area for about 10 years now, providing first aid and medical services,' explained Eoin Sutton of Swords Order of Malta.
The unit also provides community care for the elderly and disabled, first aid courses for the public, acts as a back-up for the statutory Emergency Services in times of crisis and helps run the International Camp for young disabled people.
The unit is run entirely on donations and the countless hours of time and dedication the members put in.
'Now we are hoping to recruit more volunteers to train up and become members of the organisation', said Eoin.
Once a person, over the age of 16, decides they want to join the Order of Malta, they are invited to attend a first aid training course and are registered with the unit.
'We provide them with uniforms and from there on, once they complete the first aid course, they can then progress to First Responder level and the highest level a member can achieve is the Emergency Medical Technician, which is a state-recognised practitioner level,' said Eoin.
'There is also the good social aspect of the unit and getting out and about attending so many events, from sporting events to parades and other events throughout the Fingal area,' he added.
The unit is also hoping to set up a Cadet section for youngsters aged between 10 to 16 years.
Anyone wishing to join up can attend the unit's weekly meetings which take place on Wednesdays at 8.30pm at St Cronan's Church on the Brackenstown Road or contact Eoin Sutton on 085-7317968 for further information.
