'Mini-riot' breaks out at bonfire in Balbriggan

Up to 200 youths began to fire missiles at gardaí when they arrived to investigate reports of disturbances at a bonfire in Balbriggan.

UP to 200 local youths fired bricks, bottles and cans at gardaí in Balbriggan at an illegal Halloween bonfire that spilled over into frightening scenes on the streets.

Gardaí in riot gear were called to a bonfire in Balbriggan where up to 200 local youths fired a number of missiles at local Garda officers as they attempted to disperse the mob. Disturbances had been reported at the bonfire and when gardaí arrived on the scene they were set upon by an angry mob of youths firing bottles, cans and even bricks at Garda officers in what's been described as a 'mini-riot'. At the height of the disturbances there were more than 20 Garda officers on the scene trying to restore order. The local fire brigade was called to the scene and asked by gardaí to extinguish the fire and order was restored to the area within an hour. Meanwhile, gardai are investigating an incident at the Texaco filling station in Skerries after a man entered the forecourt and began slashing petrol hoses. GARDAI in riot gear were called to a bonfire in Balbriggan where up to 200 local youths fired bricks, bottles and cans at local Garda officers as they attempted to disperse the mob. On Halloween night, Balbriggan gardaí were called to the scene of a large illegal bonfire on wasteground to the rear of the graveyard off the Harry Reynolds Road. Disturbances had been reported at the bonfire and when gardaí arrived on the scene they were set upon by an angry mob of youths firing bottles, cans and even bricks at Garda officers. Reinforcements were called in from local traffic units and a special public order unit dressed in riot gear, complete with helmets and shields. At the height of the disturbances there were more than 20 Garda officers on the scene trying to restore order. The local fire brigade was called to the scene and asked by gardaí to extinguish the fire and order was restored to the area within an hour, according to Garda sources. At least one arrest was made during the Halloween disturbances. That youth will be dealt with through the Juvenile Officer Liaison system. Luckily there were no major injuries sustained by gardaí or the public during the incident which occurred around 8 p.m. on Halloween night.
