A TALENTED young horseman from Swords was named leading rider at this year's prestigious RDS Discover Ireland Horse Show after he took the national championship in his class on Aga Khan Day.
Matt Garrigan (15) from Swords was crowned the 148 National Champion on his mount Dr. Spot at last week's Discover Ireland Dublin Horse Show. Some 28 combinations of horse and rider qualified for the three days of jumping from four regional qualifiers that took place countrywide earlier in the season. Out of the 28, fourteen went through to the National Final in the Main Arena on Aga Khan Day. Matt qualified two ponies to jump in the final but it was the everreliable nine-year-old Dr. Spot that jumped clear along with four others to go head-to-head against the clock. Matt, being second to go ,had to jump a fast clear which he did and left it for them all to do. Fortunately he had the fastest clear round to crown him national champion. The same combination has had a very successful season on the Irish Pony Nations Cup Teams competing in Holland, Germany and France this summer. Matt returned to France again in July as part of the Irish Pony team competing at this year's European Championships. To top it all Matt was awarded Joint Leading Rider of this years RDS Discover Ireland Horse Show.
