Man bought black market cigarettes and tobacco

A 41-YEAR- OLD Lithuanian man pleaded guilty at Swords District Court to purchasing black market cigarettes and tobacco.

Rimvydas Dargis, Firdea Park, Ardee, County Louth purchased cigarettes and tobaccco to the value of €6,882.73 for €2,000 from a man in the car park of Airside Retail Park in Swords on September 1. There were no Irish tax stamps on the tobacco Mr Dargis' solicitor said that her client, who is a very heavy smoker, had used his savings to buy cigarettes at a much cheaper price for his own use. She said that while her client, who has no prior convictions, knew that he was committing an offence he was not aware of how serious the offence is. Judge Dermot Dempsey said that he would impose 240 hours of community service in lieu of a four month prison sentence. Mr Dargis was then remanded on bail to Swords District Court on January 7, 2013 for a report on his suitability for community service work.
