A fire tender heads to the scene of the fire at Boland's yard, opposite Airside, on the old airport road yesterday (Monday).

A MASSIVE fire has engulfed a breakers yard on the edge of Swords, closing down local roads and causing damage estimated at €150,000.

Boland's yard opposite Airside on the old airport road to Swords was ablaze on Sunday night as a fire raged through the yard after being started in the back of one of the cars on site. The blaze is believed to have spread quickly through the yard and there were major safety concerns over the fire because of the presence of gas cannisters on the site. Several units of Dublin Fire Brigade attended the scene after the blaze was reported to the emergency services at 11.50 p.m. on Sunday night. Fire tenders were still managing the fire the following morning and the road passing the site remained closed to traffic. Joe Boland, who owns the yard, spoke briefly to the Fingal Independent but said he was ' too upset' to comment on the incident which Gardaí in Swords are treating as 'suspicious'. It is understood that CCTV footage from the yard has been retrieved and will form an important part of the investigation into the fire. There were no workers present at the yard when the blaze began and nobody was injured in the incident.
